Herkimer County Farm & Home Safety Day
The Herkimer County Soil and Water Conservation District held their 22nd Annual Herkimer County Farm and Home Safety Day on Tuesday, June 7th, 2022. The event was held at the Herkimer County Fair Grounds in Frankfort, NY. The goal of Farm and Home Safety Day is to prevent farm and home injuries and deaths by teaching children about safety related hazards and how to avoid them. In 2021, the 21st Farm and Homes Safety Day was held virtually due to the ongoing pandemic.
In 2022, there were approximately 550 fifth graders from schools throughout Herkimer County attending including: Benton Hall Academy, Jarvis, West Canada Valley, Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer Elementary, and more.
Participants are typically divided into small groups that rotate between seventeen stations, each of which will teach a specific safety topic such as: bike safety, pool and water safety, electrical safety, lawn equipment safety, etc.. Each group has at least one adult leader who guides them through the stations.
