Herkimer County Envirothon
The Herkimer County Envirothon is an outdoor, hands-on, educational event in the field of Natural Resource Conservation for local Herkimer County High School students. Students visit 5 testing stations: Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils, Forestry, and a Current Issue. We want to make students aware of the world around them and the natural resources that we need to protect. Most kids involved will continue a college career in the conservation or science field and it is our goal to spark that interest for students.
We had our 25th annual Herkimer County Envirothon on Wednesday May 8th 2019 at Herkimer College. Thank you to all of our generous donors and volunteers! This year, Central Valley Academy, Mount Markham, Poland, and Little Falls all sent teams. Approximately 50 students participated with advisors and volunteers. The students competed in five categories: soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics, and a current issue of “Agriculture and the Environment: Knowledge and Technology to Feed the World”. The first place finisher for Herkimer County was Poland “Team B”. Poland “Team A” finished 2nd and CVA “Team C” took 3rd place. The top three teams received a plaque and each member of the 1st place team was presented with a $50 cash prize for their achievement.

This competition fosters student interest in environmental issues through direct hands-on participation. Everyone involved in the Envirothon had a great time and the teachers would agree that it was a great hands-on learning experience, focused on the conservation of our natural resources. This outdoor event gives students the opportunity to get away from the typical classroom setting and get their hands dirty with interactive science related questions. Poland “Team B” went on to represent Herkimer County at the New York State Envirothon on Wednesday, May 22nd and Thursday, May 23rd at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.

The Herkimer County Envirothon is made possible by donations from local businesses and our dedicated volunteers.
